HISTORY
Around 1997-1998, Mike Reagan gave a class in model railroad layout scenery design and technique at his train store, Train America, in Canfield, Ohio. These classes were used to develop a 3-rail O-gauge modular layout. Once a person in the class chose the type of scenery design; such as, landscape, industrial, etc., and built the module, it could then be combined with other modules to form a large portable train layout.
Because of Mike's business development and time constraints, it became necessary to organize a railroad club to carry on the function of this modular concept. Thus, with about a dozen members, the Western Reserve Modular Railroad Club was formed.
TODAY
We are based in Northeastern Ohio, with Youngstown being centered between most of our members. We presently have members who live in Akron, Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Cortland, Girard, Hubbard, New Waterford, and Poland.
The overall size of the main layout (#1) is 19 feet wide by 34 feet long. We have four loops of track which gives us the capability of running four trains at the same time. The layout is cab (throttle) controlled. The four loops are powered by two MTH Z-4000 transformers. Each MTH Z-4000 has two cabs, with 200 watts of power per cab. With the addition of the MTH Z-4000 Remote Control System, or the Lionel TMCC Remote Control System, we can control the trains remotely. This allows us to move around the layout and control the trains using the hand-held remote. Since we do not have to man the transformer cabs we can mingle with the public and allow them to run the trains on these loops. An MTH Z-750 transformer is available as a spare. There are a number of red push button controls placed around the layout. Visitors can push these red buttons to run the various animated accessories that are on the layout. This layout is used when we do multiple day or extended event shows.
We also have a smaller modular layout (#2) which is 11 feet wide by 16 feet long. This smaller layout allows us to set up for one day events and at smaller venues. The layout has two loops of track which allows us to run two trains at a time. One side of the layout has city scenes and the other side of the layout has a steel mill complex. Visitors to this layout will recognize many of the buildings from Youngstown, Ohio's past.
We also have built a 20 foot by 20 foot permanent layout at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor. Photos can be found here.
We have set up at various train shows throughout the local area. We also we have set up for local elementary schools, libraries, shopping centers/malls, and community functions. Pictures from our recent shows can be found on the gallery page.
